Rice University General Policy No.
803-70
REGULATING SALES ON
CAMPUS
Traditionally the sale of books, stationery, supplies and novelties
have been reserved for the Campus Store and will continue. Sammy's
operation in the Memorial Center is a responsibility of the
University Food Service. All direct food sales and catering, except
for athletic events, should remain the responsibility of the
University Food Service. The Business Manager of Athletics is
responsible for all sales at athletic events.
Vending machine operations in locations in other than the
residential colleges are to be controlled by contract with a
vending firm or firms and administered through the Campus Business
Office. No private enterprise benefiting a single entrepreneur is
to be permitted.
The profits accruing from the operation of the vending units
will be maintained by the University in a separate account and this
surplus distributed on an annual or semiannual basis as
follows:
1. A department or departments served by machines at a single
location may request that ninety percent of the surplus from that
location be returned. This request will be granted if the
department agrees to support the vending program by aiding in
making refunds for machine malfunctions, reports needs for repair
and service to the Business Office and reports suspicions of
theft and vandalism to the Security Office. The remainder of the
surplus is to be distributed on a ratio of two-thirds to the Rice
Student Association and one-third to the Graduate Student
Association.
2. The surplus from machines located in areas of general
campus usage where a department(s) is not responsible (or has
declined responsibility) will be distributed on a ratio of
two-thirds to the Rice Student Association and one-third to the
Graduate Student Association.
The Dean of Students is the point of contact for an activity at
variance with the above practice, e.g., the Graduate Wives' Bake
Sale, etc., and he or she should be contacted for
determination of the campus policy.
