Rice University Human Resources
Policy No. 431-94
AUDITING COURSES
APPLIES TO ALL RICE UNIVERSITY FACULTY AND STAFF WHO ARE
ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS AND RETIREES
Benefits-eligible faculty and staff and their spouses as well as
retired employees and their spouses may audit one course per
semester without charge provided space is available. Application
for this benefit is made by completing the application for tuition
waiver/audit form and submitting it to Human Resources prior to
registration. The permission of the instructor is required to audit
the course.
The employee must also have the approval of his or her
supervisor, who must verify that the employee's attendance at
classes will not adversely affect department services or
activities.
Certain understandings apply to this policy: (1) the employee
will make up the time devoted to courses taken during working
hours; (2) enrollment in Rice courses by one employee in a
department should be managed so that it does not create extra work
for co-workers.
An auditor does not normally take quizzes or final exams.
Participation in class activities and discussions is at the
discretion of the instructor.
