Dear Rice community,
It is with shock and sadness that those of us here in Houston have witnessed via the media the devastation caused by the recent earthquake and powerful aftershocks that occurred recently in Haiti. As members of the Rice University community, our thoughts naturally have turned to our friends and their families who may have been in the area.
It is especially heartbreaking to learn that alumna Diane (Berry) Caves (Baker ’00) has been reported missing since the earthquake hit. Caves is on temporary assignment in Haiti for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I know that Ping and I join the entire Rice community in expressing our sincere hope that Diane will soon be found safe and unharmed.
I encourage the Rice community worldwide to contribute as best as you can to the recovery efforts that are underway. While it may make most sense to contribute through efforts in your local community, the Rice Community Involvement Center has listed several options, both campus-based, Houston-based, and beyond, at this site: http://cic.rice.edu/HaitianEarthquake/.
Please keep the people of Haiti and their families all over the world in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
